My Story

My brother and I have developed a not-for-profit in Costa Rica called Tragedy to Triumph to help the disabled and the indigent. Over the years, I have seen people with physical limitations trying to exercise, recover, and maintain their mobility.

Obviously, many people have access to a treadmill, but the rails, width, and height make it very hard for someone with a disability or someone going through rehabilitation to use it safely and efficiently.

My own experience with injury and rehab helped me see this problem more clearly. That experience led me to create the idea for the Tread CrutchCaneWalker, an adaptive device designed to help people stabilize themselves and transfer weight while using a treadmill.

Tread CrutchCaneWalker

Engineering Better Outcomes

The Tread CrutchCaneWalker was created to address a functional deficit in rehabilitation: the inability to safely use a cane, crutch, or walker on a treadmill.

The Problem

Treadmills are efficient at their job, but the positioning and height of treadmill rails cannot adapt to the needs of people with disabilities or patients going through rehabilitation.

THE INNOVATION

The Tread CrutchCaneWalker

This device adapts and morphs into multiple positions using 360-degree ball joints. It is designed to function like a cane, crutch, or walker, helping users stabilize themselves and transfer weight while on a treadmill.

Why This Matters

You cannot take a cane, walker, or crutch to a treadmill. This limitation makes treadmill-based rehabilitation inefficient for many people. The Tread CrutchCaneWalker was created to bridge that gap by giving users a more adaptable way to stabilize themselves during rehabilitation.

My Experience

A Personal Journey of Resilience

As a freshman playing varsity lacrosse at Oxbridge, I tore my ACL. This tragedy put me through a long rehab process that included immobilization and partial weight bearing with crutches.

Unfortunately, working on a treadmill while trying to hold myself erect with the railings was very inefficient. This failure of a treadmill led me to imagine a morphing device that would allow a person to stabilize themselves and transfer weight while on the treadmill.

Although life has moments of tragedy, this ACL tear allowed me to see a functional deficit in rehab and create a unique adaptive solution for the treadmill.

Project Roadmap

At this stage of development, the next step is to create functional prototypes and conduct a local study. The goal is to test the device, gather feedback, and continue developing the Tread CrutchCaneWalker as part of the Tragedy to Triumph humanitarian mission.

1

Prototype Development

Build early functional prototypes of the Tread CrutchCaneWalker to evaluate stability, adaptability, and real-world usability.

2

Local Study

Conduct a local study in Costa Rica with users, rehabilitation environments, or support organizations to gather practical feedback.

3

Humanitarian Expansion

Continue building Tragedy to Triumph as a not-for-profit effort focused on helping the disabled and indigent through practical support and innovation.
